DON’T MISS GREASE … IT’S ELECTRIFYIN’
GREASE is the word! Since breaking out on Broadway in 1972 Grease’s place has been firmly established in the cultural hall of fame, having seduced the hearts of millions with its back-to-back sizzling tunes and winning the viewers’ vote to become the Number One Greatest Musical, of Channel 4’s “100 Greatest Musicals”.
Grease has proved that a musical love story, bursting with denim, cheerleaders, slick hairstyles and raging teenage hormones is timeless. This production of Grease originally opened in the West End in 1993 (co-produced with Robert Stigwood) where it enjoyed a fantastic run of 6 years. Grease is the perfect outing for all the family – this slice of 50s Americana is guaranteed to have even granny hand-jiving in the aisle.
As leader of the T-Birds, the rebel ‘Danny Zuko’ oozes sex appeal and can have any ‘chick’ he desires. High School is only an excuse to flirt with the ‘bombshells’, get up to mayhem and smoke cigarettes. Along comes ‘Sandy Dumbrowski’ – a true beauty but a real square – and the chase is on!
HAIRSPRAY
Piccadilly Theatre
Mon-Sat 19.30 ¦ Thur & Sat 15.00
Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters movie Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues.
In 1962 ( the '50s are out and change is in the air ) Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's ( a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart ) dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to racially integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960's.
Just when being a supersize has become a mortal sin, Tracy Turnblad rolls into the West End. She’s a ball of fun, chubby and cheerful but oh, so light on her sturdy stumps and determined to be, er, huge on the Corny Collins television show as a dancing queen.
Hairspray is set in the segregated Sixties in Baltimore, when being fat was a fault (Tracy’s generously portioned laundress mother, a warm and wonderful Michael Ball in glamorous drag, reminds her:‘They don’t put people like us on television, except to be laughed at’) but being black was a crime. That means both Ten-ton Tracy and skinny, black Inez are turned away from auditions for the title Miss Hairspray 1962.
BACK TO TOPJERSEY BOYS
Prince Edward Theatre
Mon-Sat 19.30 ¦ Tue & Sat 14.30
Jersey Boys is a new musical based on the life story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi. The musical chronicles the lives of a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks who went on to become one of the biggest pop music sensations of their time. Jersey Boys features their hit songs, including "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," and "Oh What a Night."
So there's this kid, Frankie Castelluccio, and he sings like an angel. An angel. He's living in the suburbs in New Jersey, destined to be a barber, until he meets Tommy DeVito, a savvy hustler with a guitar and a vision. Tommy's the guy who can get Frankie (and himself) out of Jersey. Nick Massi, another guy with a musical gift, joins up with them, but trios are out, quartets are in. Where's the fourth man for the group? Little Joey Fishes (that's Pesci—yeah, that Joe Pesci) finds him, a prodigy named Bob Gaudio; Frankie's wife Mary tells him to spell his stage name with an "i" at the end instead of a "y" (that would be: Valli); and the neon sign of the Four Seasons Lounge gives them their new name. Gaudio writes songs—can he come up with the smasheroo hit that will give Frankie and the boys their own distinctive sound and turn them into superstars?
You bet he can. After loads of false starts, he pens a thing that goes She - e - e-e-e-e-ry baby (Sherry baby) She - e - rry, can you come out tonight - And the rest, as they say, is history.
This musical is new hit musical. We're talking positive vibes exploding around the room like hyperactive—radioactive!—jumping beans; a room full of people on stage and in the audience so jazzed and so in synch with the unabashed delight of the thing that they can hardly contain themselves, so that when Frankie and Tommy and Bob and Nick finally break through with "Sherry," the audience cheers.
This unforgettable story is JERSEY BOYS - the smash hit Broadway musical sensation, which opens in the West End in February 2008.
Featuring all their classic hits:
"SHERRY" "BIG GIRLS DON´T CRY" "CAN´T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU" "BYE, BYE, BABY (BABY, GOODBYE)" "WORKING MY WAY BACK TO YOU" "DECEMBER 1963 (OH, WHAT A NIGHT)" "WALK LIKE A MAN" and more.
JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
Adelphi Theatre
Mon, Wed-Sat 19.30 ¦ Wed & Sat 15.00

The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat:
In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul's Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a 'pop cantata' for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007's and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph. Although Joseph has been performed by both professional and amateur companies all over the world and by thousands of schools, this is the first professional production to incorporate the children's choir as an integral part of the production. This colourful retelling of the biblical story about dreamboat Joseph, his uncanny abilities and his designer coat sings out to young and old alike with a score which is wall to wall hits - including Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do.
For a limited season only, and with a young company led by a new star, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT is sure to be the hot ticket in West End
BACK TO TOPLA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Playhouse Theatre
Mon-Sat 19.30 ¦ Wed & Sat 14.30

The idyllic existence of Georges and the dazzling drag artiste Albin, star of the La Cage aux Folles club, is threatened when Georges’ son announces his engagement to the daughter of a right-wing politician, who wants to close down the local colourful nightlife!
With a visit from the prospective in-laws imminent, they all decide to take drastic action to hide their lifestyle...but can they keep it up?
Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein’s musical is a celebration of homosexuality in which the most unappealing character is Edouard Dindon, who stands up for family values. Actually, so does the musical, since Albin and Georges have lived together as a couple for more than 20 years, bringing up Georges’s son together. Unfortunately, the son has fallen in love with Edouard Dindon’s daughter. Illusion and fantasy are what drive so many musicals and the same is true here, but Terry Johnson pulls off a brilliant climax to the end of the first act. Singing ‘I Am What I Am’, Albin removes his wig, goes down into the stalls, throws open the exit door and can be seen disappearing down the street in the real world. There’s no better way to chase away recession blues – unless you’d prefer to be protesting outside.
