An empty beach on the island of ThassosWhy Greece?

We started to explore Greece in 1971 ... fell in love ...!

In Greece, you are standing at crossroads of cultures, colours and civilisations. A country with a uniquely affluent historical past, inhabited by people looking confidently and optimistically into the future.

Greece is a country of beautiful contradictions, a constant journey in time, from the present to the past and back again. Walk through the olive groves, through ancient sites. Roam from beaches to rocky mountains and explore the breathtaking scenery.

Macedonia is Greece's largest geographical region and it occupies the northern part of the country. The climate is generally continental, though coastal areas to have a mediterranean climate in the northern part of the country.

don't forget to visit one of the many pittoresque villages on the island of Thassos

East of Thessaloniki are the districts of Serres, Drama and Kavala and their respective capitals with the same names. Kavala is divided into a new and old town, the scenic harbour full of little fishing boats, and the medieval castle. Outside the town's city is the archaeological site of ancient Phillipi.

Across the sea is Thassos, the island of the Sirens according to mythology. Beautiful and verdant, with splendid beaches, and important antiquities. In the summer, ancient plays are re-enacted in the ancient theatre.

» » » » We started to explore Greece back in 1971. We worked and lived in Athens, Rhodes and other islands between 1975 and 1988. We always return to Greece at least twice a year. We are continuing exploring but from other objectives. We are looking for something "true" Greek, not much developed and relaxing. We have found a paradise so continue read! » » » »

View from the beach tavern - octapus driying in the sunWhy the island of Thassos

Easy to reach and so relaxed!

THASSOS is the most northerly island in the Aegean group lying just off the coast of mainland Greece. Dubbed the 'Emerald Isle', Thassos is notably green. Slightly off the main tourist trail, it has also escaped the notice of the big package holiday firms although islanders have started up some resorts, much remains authentic and charming.

The island is small enough for any resort to be easily reached, beaches are rarely crowded and the interior hills are cloaked in pine forest and crisscrossed by paths. A good coastal road circles the island, giving easy access to its many beaches and charming forest villages.

Thassos is not for island hoppers, it being off the main ferry routes. But its position, close to the mainland and with a regular ferry service, makes it popular with Europeans who can get there by car. Thassos is very famous for its clean beaches, its hospitality, its tasty vine and the magnificent honey.

one of the many wonderful beaches on the island of ThassosWhy Skala Prinos / Dasilion?

Most tranquil, least developed part of Thassos

The word "Skala" means villages harbour. Exact meaning is that this village is the harbour of an other interior village. The world "Skala" means "door" or "way to an other village.

Skala Prinos is located at the north west of Thassos, which is the harbour of Prinos, Micros Prinos and Megalos Prinos and after Limenas the most important harbour of Thassos. Here you can take the boat to the mainland.

Skala Prinos is the typical harbour village. Here you will find buses to reach other different villages on the isle. The bus arrives at the same moment as the ferry docks and are driving away after a few minutes.

To visit the market (every monday morning) in Prinos is a must. You can also take the ferry to reach Kavala for a nice visit.

In Skala Prinos there are some shops to buy souvenirs, postcards and stamps. At the supermarket you can buy food. You will find plenty of restaurants / taverns serving mostly delicious Greek specialties but as well some european international food.

At the harbour there is a cash dispenser and an automate of the post office at your disposal. The two machines are in a kind of pillar! They accept all known credit cards. You will not find a bank or a post office in Skala Prinos.
